Welcome to Michael Pio's Page

Michael Pio

On February 1, 2017 my wife Jennifer was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She was 34 years old and our daughter was barely 8 months old at the time.

Over the past 2+ years, Jennifer has undergone 4 surgeries, 6 treatments of intense chemotherapy, 35 treatments of external radiation, 39 treatments of Herceptin and Perjeta which she will continue indefinitely or until new studies are released. She’s been to the hospital for doctor’s appointments over 120 times in just the past two years. In addition, she will take an oral hormone suppressant for the next 10 years. When you add that all in relation into hours spent at the hospital or doctor’s visits, she has spent approximately 550 hours or 23 days at the hospital.

This year, Jennifer and I have again decided to make a very personal commitment. In October, we will be participating in a special event, YSC Tour de Pink. On October 25-27, 2019, we will join hundreds of other cyclists as we ride more than 200 miles to support young women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Our small but mighty team of two was recruited by several larger teams following a successful 2018 and we are excited to announce that we have joined Team Hershey in your Heart as riders in the TDP West 2019. We hope that by joining a larger and well established team, we can have a larger impact. Team Hershey in Your Heart has participated in dozens of TDP’s and have continued to raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for YSC.

Your donation will directly support Young Survival Coalition and ensure that no young woman faces breast cancer alone. YSC offers resources, connections and outreach so women feel supported, empowered and hopeful. YSC is the only national nonprofit that solely focuses on serving young women under the age of 40 affected by breast cancer. YSC serves over 8,000 women each year with support and education to be their best health advocate throughout all stages of breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and long-term survivorship.

Cancer can be a very isolating disease, and especially so for a young woman who may still be finishing their education, starting a career, and building her romantic and family life. YSC’s supportive services include: in-person support groups around the country, online video support groups, one-on-one peer mentoring, creation and distribution of free educational materials for survivors, co-survivors and healthcare providers, a training program for survivors to amplify the need for expanded research and advocacy, and an annual conference called the YSC Summit. Read more about YSC here:

You can view YSC’s audited financials and annual reports online here:

We have committed to raising $6,000 to participate in this ride, but we’ve set a personal goal of raising $10,000 by October 1, 2019. We’re asking you to make a personal commitment too. Can we count on your support?

Please consider making a fully-tax deductible donation to help us achieve this goal. We hope that you’ll share this incredible adventure with us by supporting our fundraising efforts.

YSC Tour de Pink is more than a cycling event. We ride to honor survivors, support newly diagnosed young women, raise awareness in the community and help YSC provide programs for young adults diagnosed with breast cancer. We hope we can count on you!

Thank you in advance, for your support.
