What do you do when you hear those 3 little words..."You've got cancer?"
I have heard those words more than once. As a three time cancer thriver, those words no longer strike fear in me. You see, I have managed to find the Strength in my cancer journey.
My story begins like this...my first diagnosis with breast cancer was in 2002 at the age of 43. When the doctor told me my diagnosis, my whole world stopped at that moment. Those three words are not the words you want to hear and those three words were fearful.
As soon as my diagnosis was received the first time, my thoughts were... what is going to happen to me; what will happen to my family; and what will my future be. There is so much going through your mind at the time of diagnosis. If you let it, the fear factor can overwhelm you at times. Somehow you must find the strength to get through your cancer journey even though your journey at times can bring you to your knees.
My journey back to the "new' normal lasted almost 16 years. In that time, I have watched my young children turn into "awesome" adults; have traveled the world with my husband and have had a successful career. Received my second diagnosis of breast cancer in March of 2018 after a doing a preventative double mastectomy because of a genetic mutation. Was also diagnosed with a chronic leukemia at the same time.
This time, there wasn't too much fear with the diagnosis. You see, you can find strength in life's journey when the road is full of twists and turns. I found the courage and strength to just keep moving forward each day with whatever life brings to me. I may stumble from time to time, but as long as I am moving forward that's all that matter to me.
I am honored and proud to say that YSC has been a big part of my journey for over 17 years. I was a young survivor, who is now a seasoned thriver.
This year I have again made the commitment to ride in YSC's Tour De Pink, a three day, 200 mile bike ride. Can I count on your support with a donation?
Your donation will directly support Young Survival Coalition and ensure that no young woman faces breast cancer alone. YSC offers resources, connections and outreach so women feel supported, empowered and hopeful. YSC is the only national nonprofit that solely focuses on serving young women under the age of 40 affected by breast cancer. YSC serves over 8,000 women each year with support and education to be their best health advocate throughout all stages of breast cancer diagnosis,
treatment, and long-term survivorship.
You can view YSC’s audited financials and annual reports online here: youngsurvival.org/who-we-are/financial-information Read more about YSC here: youngsurvival.org
How will your donation help?
$25 could fund YSC materials at three healthcare providers’ offices.
$100 could provide a Newly Diagnosed Navigator to six women when they need it most.
$250 could allow us to train four survivors to serve as a peer supporters.
$500 could fund a survivor advocate in our RISE training program
$1,200 could pay for two young women to travel to the YSC Summit, an annual conference for young women affected by breast cancer and their co-survivors.
Any amount helps!
"Even if you stumble, you are still moving forward."
