Welcome to Team Jen's Page

Team Jen

On February 1, 2017 my wife Jennifer was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She was 34 years old and our daughter was barely 8 months old at the time.

Over the past 18 months, Jennifer has undergone 3 surgeries, 6 treatments of intense chemotherapy, 35 treatments of external radiation and 22 treatments of Herceptin and Perjeta which she will continue indefinitely or until new studies are released. In addition, she will take an oral hormone suppressant for the next 10 years. This November, she will have an intense reconstruction surgery lasting 10-12 hours, which will include a double mastectomy with tummy tissue transplant and will be the first of three reconstructive procedures over the following 12 months.

This year, Jennifer and I have decided to make a very personal commitment. In October, we will be participating in a special event, YSC Tour de Pink. On October 26-28, 2018, we will join hundreds of other cyclists as we ride more than 200 miles to support young women diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s a huge challenge for all of us, but together, we know that we can do it.

Young Survivor Coalition (YSC) is the premier global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. YSC offers resources, connection and outreach so young women feel supported, empowered and hopeful. With an interactive website and support networks across the United States, it is YSC’s goal that no young woman be left to fight breast cancer alone.

The funds raised by YSC Tour de Pink will help them focus on education and outreach opportunities, and provide peer-to-peer support for newly diagnosed young women.

Our family would like to thank Innovative Artists for helping to kick-start our fundraising campaign and for making a generous donation. We greatly appreciate your support and generosity.

We would also like to give a huge shout out and thank you to Bicycle Angels for lending us road bikes for our training and charity ride. Bicycle Angels is a non-profit charity that loans road bicycles for free to people that want to participate and fund raise for an eligible charity cycling or triathlon event, but don’t have a suitable bike to use, and can’t afford one. They help remove a major barrier to charity fundraising, plus engage new people into cycling. About half of their loan recipients later go on to buy their own bike. You can learn more about Bicycle Angels and their amazing organization here: bicycleangels.com/webangels

As a team, we have committed to raising $3,500 to participate in this ride, but we’ve set a personal goal of raising $8,000 by October 1, 2018. We’re asking you to make a personal commitment, too. Can we count on your support?

Please consider making a fully-tax deductible donation to help us achieve this goal. We hope that you’ll share this incredible adventure with us by supporting our fundraising efforts.

YSC Tour de Pink is more than a cycling event. We ride to honor survivors and thrivers like myself, support newly diagnosed young women, raise awareness in the community and help YSC provide programs for young women diagnosed with breast cancer. We hope we can count on you!

Thank you, in advance, for your continued love and support.

Sincerely,

Michael & Jennifer Pio (and Addie too!)
